Lynette Bowen

Lyn is a lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the Port Macquarie campus of the University of Newcastle. Lyn's doctoral research interests focused on the experience of registered nurses who mentor undergraduate nursing students in a rural context. She recognises the value of working collaboratively with clinical partners, being aware of the commitment of registered nurses to the development of future nurse colleagues. This led her to explore their experience of mentoring undergraduate nursing students on clinical placement in the rural context. Lyn has an interest in professional portfolios, having previously been an early career researcher on an ALTC project that explored the use of e-portolios to faciliate work integrated learning (WIL) in construction and nursing disciplines. She has also written and reviewed literature in this area. Prior to her academic appointment Lyn was employed by the North Coast Area Health Service as the Nurse Educator for Port Macquarie Base Hospital. She has extensive experience in clinical education, as well as having worked as a Clinical Nurse Consultant in infection prevention and control. Whilst at the university, Lyn has taught extensively in undergraduate courses, contributing to course development, especially that pertaining to infection control and prevention. She also teaches the postgraduate course in Infection Control. Research Expertise Lyn Bowen is a registered nurse with experience in mixed methods research and qualitative methods. Her research interests to date have focused on professional portfolios, registered nurses who mentor and support undergraduate nursing students, teaching and learning strategies and their influence on student learning. She is currently involved in studies exploring attitudes clinical placements models; attitudes to older people; understanding of surgical conscience; and understanding and application of the concept of asepsis in acute areas. Lyn is also co-supervising two doctoral students.

Teaching Expertise Lyn has extensive experience in teaching, having taught in clinical and university contexts. Her teaching experience spans more than twenty years. She has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses, using face-to-face, blended and online modes. She is passionate about facilitating learning environments that will equip the next generation of nurses to deliver safe, competent nursing care.

Collaborations Lyn is a member of the UON Centre for Health Professional Education, which focuses its interests on research that will enhance the education of health professionals, with an emphasis on improved patient outcomes.
